I love making scented playdough for different activities. September is our time for studying apples so I have to make apple or cinnamon scented playdough. I use two playdough recipes. KoolAid playdough works great but you are limited to the flavors that KoolAid makes. The following recipe can be scented with any oil flavoring. I prefer LorAnn oils. Some of the flavorings are stronger than others. Use 1 dram cinnamon flavoring
You will need:
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 cups water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 dram cinnamon flavoring oil
Red food coloring or paste
Add flour, salt, and cream of tartar to a saucepan.
Measure 2 cups water. Add red coloring to desired color. Add vegetable oil and flavored oil to water and stir.
Pour water into sauce pan with flour mixture.
Heat on medium heat 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly. Turn out on counter and allow to cool slightly.
Kids can begin kneading dough when cool enough to touch. Knead until smooth.
Note: You can substitute 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon allspice if you can’t find the flavoring oil. You may need to add a little more oil when kneading to keep it smooth and not crumbly.
